“And what exactly is your purpose, bringing me these photographs, Randall?” Elder Marcus asked him, tapping long white fingers on his desk.

Frustration welled up inside Randall. He hated it when Marcus used that tone with him, like Marcus was talking to an errant child instead of an adult man, an important enforcer of the clan. Getting pissed wouldn’t get him anywhere, so Randall took deep breaths and leaned forward in his chair. They were in Marcus’s private office, and the Elder made it clear several times he was a busy man.

Randall pointed to the photos he spread out on Marcus’s desk. “See these shots? They prove Mick’s alive.”

After learning his errant mate had faked his death or the clan pretended Mick was dead—he wasn’t quite certain yet, he did his own recon.

The little shit had clearly moved on, found another sucker to leech on.

Mick had always been resourceful, the cunning little shit. Randall couldn’t forget the time he caught Mick using the clan computers to draw instead of being like a good domesticated mate and doing his damn laundry.

That Omega had embarrassed him enough. It wouldn’t be long before the other tabby cat shifters in the Orange Tails learned Mick was alive. Randall’s reputation would take a fall again. He could almost imagine those prissy shits gossiping about him, how he still couldn’t leash one Omega tabby.

Marcus regarded him a few moments, his silence daunting. “And so what if Mick Stone is out there? The clan has cut all connections to the traitor, the same way we did with his cousin.”

Stunned the Elder didn’t deny allowing Mick to live, he slumped in his chair. “What happened to the clan’s strict policies to punish traitors?” he demanded.

Marcus’ eyes flashed in warning. “Don’t raise your voice to me, Randall. You forget who you’re talking to. One word from me to the other Elders and I can influence them to exile you, as well.”

A chill went down his spine at those words. He suppressed a shudder. The Orange Tails chose seclusion from the other paranormal groups in the city for a reason. Here in the compound, Randall was top cat, so high up in the hierarchy no submissive cat in their right mind would refuse him. The Omegas and submissive tabby shifters feared him, the sound of his footsteps, but those weaklings started mouthing off to him after learning he never completely tamed Mick.

“We can’t let Mick run free. What if he babbles to the other animal shifter groups in the city that the Orange Tails can’t even deal with their traitors? Is it because of that jaguar shifter with him?”

“That jaguar shifter and his friends once brought bombs to our compound as a threat,” Marcus said, his gaze chilly. “Or have you forgotten that? Why are you really here, Randall? To salvage your lost pride? I’m sure it’s not just concern for the clan’s reputation.”

Randall clenched his fists. “Of course, for the clan.”

Marcus flashed him an ugly smile, as if the Elder was telling him he knew the truth.
